If you’re looking for the perfect antidote to the summer heatwave, look no further than the Austrian Alps. This July, we headed back to one of our favorite countries for a three-night stay in Zauchensee, and it was exactly the breath of fresh air we needed.

At an altitude of 1,350 meters, Zauchensee offers a natural air-conditioning system. While the rest of Europe sweltered, we enjoyed crisp mountain air and stunning panoramic views. If you are planning a trip here, pack your hiking boots and get ready for a workout—in Zauchensee, the only way is up!


A Serene Summer Getaway to Zauchensee, Austria

The Magic of the Mountains (and the Cows!)

Every trail we took seemed to lead straight uphill, but the reward was always worth the effort. The vistas of the surrounding peaks are nothing short of breathtaking. At the heart of the village lies the Zauchensee lake itself—a small, crystal-clear gem filled with friendly ducks and surrounded by lush greenery.

However, a word of advice for fellow travelers: watch out for the cows. In this part of Austria, the alpine pastures (Alms) are shared with livestock. Because I had my "girls" with me (who were very curious about their giant four-legged neighbors!), I made sure to give the herds a wide berth. Cows can be protective, especially if you have dogs with you, so it's always best to keep a respectful distance and stay on the marked paths.


Exploring Schloss Hoch and Beyond

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to Schloss Hoch. Located near Flachau, this historic castle looks like something out of a fairytale. The area surrounding the castle is crisscrossed with countless trails, making it a paradise for active explorers.

On our way back from the castle, we stumbled upon a shallow river. It was the perfect spot for the girls to splash around and cool off—a simple, joyful moment that reminds you why mountain vacations are so special.


Travel Tips for Zauchensee

  • Beating the Crowds: I usually avoid summer travel to stay away from the masses, but Zauchensee was a pleasant surprise. Aside from the immediate area around the lake, the trails were incredibly quiet and calm.
  • The Lift Situation: I had considered taking the Gamskogelbahn cable car to the summit to see the famous "World Cup" slopes, but keep in mind that many lifts in this specific area use chairlifts rather than enclosed cabins. If you’re traveling with dogs or very small children who aren't used to heights, it might be a bit of a challenge!
  • The Salzburger Sportwelt Card: One of the best things about staying in this region (Altenmarkt-Zauchensee) is that most accommodations provide you with a guest card. This gives you amazing discounts on public transport, lift tickets, and local events. Even if you don’t end up using every discount, it’s a fantastic perk to have in your pocket.  

The Verdict

Would I recommend Zauchensee? Without a doubt.

It is the perfect destination for those who love nature, peace, and a bit of a physical challenge. Just remember to prep your legs for those steep climbs, keep an eye out for the cows, and enjoy the crystal-clear alpine waters.

  There is something truly magical about returning to a place where you left a piece of your heart. Tuesday marked my first day back at the dog shelter in Corfu . The incredible Marketa was there with me on the first day because the dogs have changed since last year, so I needed new instructions about the dogs I didn't know yet. Day one at the shelter was a big refresh. It’s a bittersweet reality of shelter life: dogs leave when they get adopted and go to their forever homes, and new ones come in. Marketa has to make sure she matches them so they don’t have conflicts. I learned new names, new personalities, and their routines. All of them are super cute.   I generally try to avoid taking my dogs to bustling, chaotic big cities. However, on a recent business trip to Berlin, I decided to make an exception.
