The Giant and the Princess: An Unlikely Love Story in a Greek Olive Grove
When you think of a "bonded pair," you might imagine two dogs of the same breed or size. But at Tlapky z Korfu, our most famous inseparable duo looks a little like a comedy act.
Meet Fido, a powerful, athletic Bull-mix, and Sandra, a tiny, delicate soul who resembles a Chihuahua. On paper, they shouldn’t work. In reality, they are a heartwarming testament to the fact that friendship knows no size, no breed, and no limits.
Fido: The Resilient Survivor
Fido didn’t have an easy start. He arrived at our shelter years ago in a state that moved us to tears. He was emaciated, and his body was so overwhelmed by ticks that his skin was literally being eaten away to the bone. It took months of medical care just to heal his physical wounds.
But the scars on his spirit were deeper. Initially, Fido was terrified of hands. If anyone reached toward his head, he would flinch, leading us to believe he had been physically abused. Through the patient work of our founder, Markéta, Fido learned the most important lesson of his life: humans can be kind.
Today, Fido is a 30kg bundle of love. He is athletic, loves playing catch, and is obsessed with his toys. Despite being in the shelter for six years, he hasn't lost his zest for life. He just needs a forever home with someone experienced in large breeds who can give him the active life he deserves.
While Fido eventually learned to trust, our little "princess" Sandra is still on that journey. Found as a tiny puppy near a local monastery with her two siblings, Sandra was the only one who didn't find a home quickly. Her siblings were social, but Sandra was born with a "broken soul."
She is deeply fearful of humans. For Sandra, a trip to the vet or a dose of medicine requires a carefully set trap because her instinct is to hide. While she is a beautiful, tiny girl who would usually be adopted in a heartbeat, her distrust of people has kept her behind shelter bars.
The Secret Bond: Why They Need Each Other
The magic happens when Fido and Sandra are together. Sandra might not trust us, but she trusts Fido with her life.
Their daily routine is the highlight of our day at the shelter:
- The Chase: When they are let out for exercise, Sandra follows Fido like a tiny, bossy shadow.
- The Leg Nip: She has a hilarious habit of trying to "bite" Fido’s sturdy legs to get him to play.
- The Dinner Dash: The moment they hear their food bowls clinking, they race back to their pen in perfect synchronization—a giant and a tiny blur of fur.
Fido is Sandra’s protector and her confidence. Sandra, in turn, gives Fido a sense of purpose.
Could You Be Their Miracle?
Finding a home for a bonded pair is always a challenge, especially when one is a large Bull-mix and the other is a fearful tiny dog. However, for the right person—someone with a quiet home and a big heart—this duo would bring a double dose of joy.
Fido is ready for long walks and play sessions. Sandra is ready to simply exist safely by his side, watching the world from the security of her big brother's shadow.
