Niki’s Story: From Neglect to Safety
Niki didn't always have a safe place to sleep. Her story began, in a way all too common for rescue dogs, with neglect.
Four years ago, a concerned local woman noticed a dog living in deplorable conditions. Niki was trapped in a tiny pen with zero protection from the scorching sun. There was no shade, no food, and no water. The pen was riddled with holes, evidence of a bored, desperate dog trying to escape to find the basics of survival.
Niki wasn’t just physically trapped; she was withering away. She was exhausted, starving, and dehydrated.
Marketa, the founder of the shelter, didn't hesitate when she got the call. She visited the owner, hoping to reason with them. She even brought food for Niki, pleading with the owner to improve the dog's living conditions. She gave an ultimatum: “Make amends within three days or face police involvement.”
When Marketa returned three days later, her heart sank. The bag of food she had left hadn't even been opened. Niki’s suffering continued. Knowing there was no time to waste, Marketa confronted the owner again, threatening immediate legal action until they finally surrendered Niki into her care.
Thanks to the observant local woman who refused to look away, and Marketa’s persistence, Niki was finally safe.
Life at the Shelter
