A Perfect Bavarian Sunday: Reuniting with Friends, Furballs, and the Charm of Kallmünz

 Last Sunday, the open road called, leading us on a delightful journey to reunite with my former colleague, Jana, and our wonderful canine friend, Willi, in the picturesque village of Kallmünz, Bavaria, Germany. The day was a beautiful blend of heartwarming reunions, stunning landscapes, and the quiet charm of traditional Bavarian life.

We set off bright and early around 8 am, and thanks to Germany's excellent autobahns, the 2.5-hour drive was incredibly smooth and fast. There's truly something special about Bavaria; its pristine landscapes, well-kept towns, and rolling hills always make for a refreshing visit.

The Story of Willi: A Journey to His Forever Home

Our visit was particularly meaningful as it allowed us to see Willi, a sweet soul who had a rough start. My dear friend Jana, our angel, stepped in at the eleventh hour to give him the loving home he truly deserved. Willi had sadly been returned from an adoption, then moved to a temporary foster home with a strict one-month limit. It was a stressful situation, but Jana's kind heart made all the difference. They've now been together for several weeks, and it's clear Willi has found his perfect match. He's thriving, enveloped in all the love and care a dog could ever wish for. Seeing him so happy and settled brought such joy to our hearts.


Exploring the Pearl of the Naab Valley

Kallmünz itself is a gem, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Naab Valley," nestled charmingly at the confluence of the Naab and Vils rivers. This medieval market town feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow cobblestone streets, brightly colored houses, and a palpable sense of history. It's a place that has long drawn artists and poets, captivated by its unique beauty.


Our adventure took us through the quaint lanes of Kallmünz and another nearby historic town. With the sun shining brightly and temperatures climbing, our pups were more than ready for a cool-down. They had an absolute blast splashing and playing in the clear, refreshing waters of the Naab River, much to the amusement of passersby.


After working up an appetite, we settled down for a delicious lunch at a local pizzeria. To our delight, all three dogs—my two and Jana's Willi—were incredibly well-behaved, resting patiently under the table. It was a testament to their good natures and the relaxed atmosphere of the town.

The afternoon concluded back at Jana's house, where the three canine companions had an absolute field day, romping and playing together in the garden. Watching their joyful antics was the perfect end to our visit. As we headed home, my two girls were utterly exhausted but content, sleeping soundly all the way.

  • The Old Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke): This beautiful medieval bridge spanning the Naab River is an iconic symbol of Kallmünz. Stroll across it, admire the views of the colorful houses reflecting in the water, and truly soak in the town's historic atmosphere.

  • Explore the Altstadt (Old Town): Wander through the labyrinthine cobblestone streets, discover charming artisan shops, and admire the beautifully preserved houses. Each corner seems to reveal a new photogenic vista.

  • River Activities: Given its location at the confluence of the Naab and Vils rivers, Kallmünz is perfect for water activities. Consider kayaking or canoeing for a unique perspective of the town and its natural surroundings. Many local providers offer rentals.

  • Hiking and Nature Trails: The area around Kallmünz is a paradise for hikers. Numerous well-marked trails wind through forests, along the rivers, and up to scenic viewpoints, offering tranquility and stunning natural beauty.

  • Local Cafes and Restaurants: Enjoy traditional Bavarian hospitality. Grab a coffee and cake at a local cafe, or savor hearty regional dishes in one of the cozy restaurants, often with views of the rivers or the castle.

  • Artistic Heritage: Kallmünz has long been a retreat for artists, including Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. While there isn't a dedicated museum, you can feel the artistic spirit in the galleries and studios scattered throughout the town.

Kallmünz is truly a place where history, nature, and art converge, offering a serene escape and a memorable experience. It was the perfect backdrop for a day filled with friendship, furry companions, and the simple joys of a Bavarian Sunday.

  There is something truly magical about returning to a place where you left a piece of your heart. Tuesday marked my first day back at the dog shelter in Corfu . The incredible Marketa was there with me on the first day because the dogs have changed since last year, so I needed new instructions about the dogs I didn't know yet. Day one at the shelter was a big refresh. It’s a bittersweet reality of shelter life: dogs leave when they get adopted and go to their forever homes, and new ones come in. Marketa has to make sure she matches them so they don’t have conflicts. I learned new names, new personalities, and their routines. All of them are super cute.
