The Forgotten Brothers: Winnie and Milo's Long Road Home

 While their siblings and mother have all moved on to lives filled with soft beds and evening cuddles, two loyal hearts remain behind. Winnie and Milo are brothers who have spent more time  behind shelter bars than they should. As they approach their third year at the shelter without a single inquiry, their story is one of resilience, patience, and a deep hope that their "forever" is just around the corner.


A Rescue Born of Compassion

Their journey began three years ago under the harshest of circumstances. A concerned citizen reached out to Marketa, a local rescuer with a heart of gold, reporting a dire situation in the city. A neighbor’s dog was living a nightmare—chained without food or water in the sweltering heat, nursing six newborn puppies.


Negotiations followed, fueled by the urgency of survival. When Marketa arrived, she knew she couldn’t leave them behind, despite the shelter being at full capacity. She chose to build a future for them from the ground up, literally extending the shelter and constructing a new pen so this family could finally know safety.

The Empty Nest

As the puppies grew, the miracle of adoption began.


  • The Mama Dog: She was the first to find her home. Today, she lives a life of luxury, free from chains and the burning sun, knowing only love and full bowls.

  • The Siblings: Four of the puppies followed shortly after, heading off to their own forever families.


Yet, as the gates closed for the others, they remained open for Winnie and Milo. Nobody came for the boys.

It is truly a puzzle why these two haven't been snapped up yet. They are the definition of "good boys"—well-behaved, friendly, and low-drama. The only "trouble" you might find is their legendary love for food. They are little culinary detectives who will use every ounce of their charm to locate a hidden stash of treats.

They aren't suited for a life strictly indoors or in a small apartment without significant outdoor time; they need a partner for adventures and long, winding walks. While they share a beautiful bond, they are available to be adopted either together—for a double dose of love—or separately to find their own paths.


After three years of watching others leave, these brothers deserve to know what a real home feels like. They don't need much—just a bowl of food (well, maybe a few extra treats), a sturdy pair of walking shoes to follow, and a hand to rest their heads on.

  There is something truly magical about returning to a place where you left a piece of your heart. Tuesday marked my first day back at the dog shelter in Corfu . The incredible Marketa was there with me on the first day because the dogs have changed since last year, so I needed new instructions about the dogs I didn't know yet. Day one at the shelter was a big refresh. It’s a bittersweet reality of shelter life: dogs leave when they get adopted and go to their forever homes, and new ones come in. Marketa has to make sure she matches them so they don’t have conflicts. I learned new names, new personalities, and their routines. All of them are super cute.
